This week in Nursery we explored the topic of autumn. Through reading the story of ‘Leaf Man’, a tale about the changing leaves of autumn which are blown everywhere by the cool autumn wind, the children were able to learn more about colours, and how the leaves change to different colours during autumn.
They sang songs about autumn, and we danced like swaying leaves in the wind. We took walks to collect the falling leaves, listening to the sound of leaves in the wind, reiterating parts of the story, watching how the wind moves the leaves through the air and wondering where those leaves would land. The children of nursery had the opportunity to have a closer look at autumn leaves using magnifying glasses, crushing them in their hands to hear the sound as well as feel the texture of the different leaves.
With the celebration of Halloween, the children of Early Years had a costume dress up day and came to school in various costumes, from princesses to pirates. They were given the opportunity to show their costumes and ask questions about the costumes of others. We had several Halloween activities such as pumpkin making, spooky potion brewing, autumn tree painting and spooky face painting.
