Our school is deeply committed to providing safe and nutritious meals for all our students. This dedication is evident in our careful planning and special attention to the dietary needs of over 100 pupils with food allergies. Our catering system ensures that every student receives a diet that is free from allergens, while also being varied and nutritious.
We provide six elemental diets: gluten-free, dairy/lactose-free, egg-free, soy-free, sugar-free and vegetarian diets are also provided daily. This wide choice allows our pupils with typical food intolerances and special dietary needs to feel safe at mealtimes. Of course, some diets differ from the above and affect only a few pupils (fish, peanut allergy); in these special cases, our teachers and assistants take an active role in helping our pupils. With their help, students can avoid eating food containing allergens, even accidentally.
The allergen content of the food is always indicated on the menu. This helps students, parents, and school staff track which foods contain which ingredients.
For our younger pupils, we also provide a diet card with names to help pupils and staff avoid foods that could cause them problems. For our students with food allergies, we provide snacks labelled by name to ensure they always contain only foods that fit into the diet.
From Year 7 onwards, older students are now self-reporting their food allergies, so they take more responsibility for their meals.
While food allergies are sometimes misunderstood as a fad, the reality is that they pose a significant risk. The consequences of consuming a food to which one is sensitive can be severe. We recognize this and are fully committed to ensuring that our students with food allergies can eat safely with us.
