In order to get to their classrooms, they had to firstly cross the river over steppingstones and a bridge, as well as crawling across the thick foliage of the forrest floor!
STEAM is all about collaboration, problem-solving and communication and the students certainly rose to the challenges that they faced in their groups.
Earlier in the week, they were set a challenge to design a bridge that would carry the indigenous people and the animals across the Amazon River. Specific equipment was available to them. The bridge designs were very creative; the students used their research to inform their designs. The students predicted how much weight they would hold and the winners were announced.
As well as designing, making and testing their bridges, they also designed, made and tested a raft on water. The children were very impressive as they discussed and collaborated.
In addition to these activities, the students joined in with a tribal dance and created a soundscape to replicate the sounds of the rainforest.
It was a truly fabulous day of learning for the children and an opportunity to demonstrate the learning characteristics of resilience, communication and reflection.

At The British International School Abu Dhabi, we believe that education is not just about academic success—it’s about nurturing compassionate, responsible young people who understand the importance of giving back. This Ramadan, I have been truly moved by the way our students have embraced the spirit of the holy month, demonstrating kindness, generosity, and a genuine commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.
Inspired by the latest Nord Anglia INSIGHTS article exploring why the Early Years are the most important years of a child’s education, we know that a child’s most significant learning happens during this time - in ways that are not always immediately visible.
